NORDIC WORKSHOP on Frost & Freeze-Thaw:
“Optional essential Characteristics”
Differentiated testing methodology/-ies to accommodate for diversified climatic exposure and concrete material response and performance.
Workshop objective: Alignment of needs, definitions and actions to accommodate for a sustainable assessment of concrete performance under frost and freeze-thaw attack, in particular that of a more sustainable concrete mix design than current practises.
Background
The current testing methods and their use and performance requirements receive criticism for low degree of flexibility regarding actual needs with respect to exposure conditions and representation of service life conditions. Lack of testing precision is another factor needing attention. Together, the current methodology is perceived to create barriers to implementation of concrete with reduced environmental impact.
For products in the “harmonized zone” under the new Construction Products Regulation, assessment methods must be harmonized across the EU/EEA market. National requirements (acceptance levels) can only refer to such harmonized “essential characteristics”, i.e. be assessed according to the testing methods defined on EN level. Parts of EN 206 expectedly will be harmonized, but currently concrete durability performance has not (yet) been included. Still, for national/regional needs, the assessment methods need to be revised, enabling a more diversified approach and set of criteria than today. Considering the research need, it is also overdue to start preparations now in case concrete would be fully harmonized in future. Cement and aggregates will soon be fully harmonized.
CEN/TC 51/WG 12/TG 4 (in liaison with CEN/TC 104) is mandated with the development of testing methods for frost and Freeze-thaw resistance. The objective of the Norwegian research project FACILE-CPR (Freeze-thaw Assessment of Concrete in the Laboratory versus outdoor Exposure under the new Construction Products Regulation) is to develop elements/basis for such a new concept and testing method(s).
Organization
To discuss and make progress on this subject, FACILE-CPR invites for a Nordic workshop, with contributors from TG 4, the Nordics and the project consortium itself.
Date October 29th 09:00 – October 30th 14:00 CET
Venue Face-to-face, ZEB Laboratory, Høgskoleringen 13, Trondheim (Norway)
Registering We may need to limit the number of participants. If you send your field of interest, on-going, planned or past studies, discussion on your national level and/or contribution, we will try to fit this into the programme. Please consider the list of proposed subtopics and expected outcomes below and send an e-mail by October 7th to the organizers (both):
- Tor Arne Hammer, [email protected]
- Terje Rønning, [email protected]
If you are attending, please inform Jorunn Auth ([email protected]) about food allergies by 15 October 2026
Technical sessions, main topics
- Field studies on climate vs micro-climate observations, concrete material response and instrumentation set-up.
- Climate modelling and climate vs microclimate response – Simulations
- Field vs. lab concrete testing and (lack of;) correlation
- Laboratory testing: Specimens’ response on test conditions, focus on “special behavior” and instrumentation and/or simulation of the same.
- Sensitivity study of the current testing methods design, description and operation for test outcome:
- Testing procedure modifications believed to accommodate for more service-life realistic conditions, especially for non-CEM I concretes: Diversification of differentiated testing approach (optional “Essential Characteristics” in a Performance concept).
- Examples of such differentiated approach adopted locally (nationally or application dependent).
- Material stress from moisture and temperature stresses (and other implicit mechanisms).
- Not standalone material testing without link to (assumed/observed) field behavior, but please propose additional dimensions as you may think adequate.
Expected outcome
- Input to the TG 4 road map
- Alignment on key issues to address and how
- Supportive actions / context / motivation for the participants’ own studies/applications
- Exchange of views generally and accomplished and planned studies.
- Stakeholder consultation for the Norwegian project
Practical
- There will be an informal dinner on October 29th, information to follow.
- Accommodation: May hotels available, two have been proposed (no block booking made):
- Thon Hotel Nidaros, Thon Hotel Nidaros | Thon Hotels (45 mins walk to the meeting premises. Close to the main station.
- Choice Comfort Hotel Park, Comfort Hotel™ Park | Trondheim | Strawberry (25 mins walk to the meeting premises.)
